Why women 40+ trust this desk

Credentials, independence, and judgement you can trust.

Most skincare advice online is written by people paid to sell it. This isn't. Every recommendation here is grounded in clinical training and tested against a fixed standard.

Board-certified expertise

Cambridge & Yale-trained, Harvard residency, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology. Advice rooted in real clinical practice — not a marketing brief.

Genuinely independent

No brand pays to be reviewed or ranked. Products are bought at retail, scored on a fixed rubric, and no company sees a word before it publishes.

Grounded in real clinical practice

Eighteen years and tens of thousands of patient visits sit behind every verdict on this site. The reviews are an extension of the exam room — informed by what actually works on real skin, not a marketing brief.

A track record, in numbers

Eighteen years of measured, repeatable results.

Meet Dr. Sarah Elspeth Vane

A dermatologist's eye, an editor's standards.

British-trained and Beverly Hills-based, Dr. Vane built her reputation on two things rarely found together: rigorous medical dermatology, and the willingness to tell you when an expensive product simply isn't worth it.

The Review Desk

Independent reviews, organized by what your skin actually needs.

Every category is scored against the same five-point rubric — evidence, formulation, tolerability, elegance, and value. Start where your routine has the biggest gap.

The promise that makes this different

No brand has ever paid for a good review here.

It's the question every woman over 40 should ask of any "best of" list: who paid for this? Here, the answer is no one. That single rule is the reason this desk exists.

  • Products purchased at full retail — samples disclosed, never weighted.
  • Scored on a fixed, published rubric — not vibes or trends.
  • No copy approval. No brand sees a review before you do.
  • Affiliate links appear only after a product earns its place.

In their words

Trusted by patients and readers alike.

★★★★★
"After years of wasting money on serums, I finally have a routine that works — and a doctor I trust to tell me the truth. My skin at 54 is the best it's been in a decade."
Margaret H.Patient · Los Angeles, CA
★★★★★
"Dr. Vane is the only person online who'll say 'don't buy this.' That's exactly why I believe her when she says to buy something. The reviews saved me hundreds."
Eleanor R.Reader · San Francisco, CA
★★★★★
"Unhurried, thorough, and genuinely kind. She explained my melasma treatment like I was a colleague, not a sale. I've referred half my book club."
Patricia L.Patient · Beverly Hills, CA

Common questions

What you might be wondering.

How do you make money if brands don't pay you?
Through affiliate commissions — and only those. When you buy through a link, the site may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, but only on products that have already earned a recommendation on their own merit. No brand can pay for placement, a ranking, or a kinder score, and commissions never influence what gets recommended.
Is the skincare advice here a substitute for seeing a dermatologist?
No. The Journal and reviews are educational and reflect professional opinion, but they aren't a diagnosis or a treatment plan for your individual skin. For anything medical — a changing mole, persistent rash, or a condition that isn't improving — please see a board-certified dermatologist near you.
I'm over 40. Is this site actually for me?
Especially for you. Mature, peri- and post-menopausal skin behaves differently, and most "best of" lists ignore that. Reviews here are scored with tolerability and barrier health front of mind, and much of the Journal is written specifically for skin in its forties, fifties, and beyond.
Can I suggest a product for Dr. Vane to review?
Yes, and suggestions are genuinely welcome. If there's a product or whole category you'd like put through the rubric, send it via the contact page. Reader requests regularly shape what gets tested next — though, to protect the desk's independence, a suggestion is never a guarantee of a favorable review.
Independent · Evidence-led

Skin worth investing in deserves advice worth trusting.

Start with the reviews and build a routine on evidence — not marketing. Every verdict is scored on the same rubric, and no brand has ever paid for a place.
